I have just read…

March 23, 2009

Like Water for Chocolate… a most beautiful book: Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel which is set around the time of the Mexican Revolution and tells the tale of Tita, who as the youngest daughter is forbidden to marry but has to take care of her mother until she dies in accordance with Mexican tradition. Unfortunately for Tita she falls in love with Pedro, who in desperation to be close to her marries her sister Rosaura. For the next twenty years or so they circle around each other in unconsummated passion, until they are finally reunited.

A love story with a difference I think so. The novel is punctuated with random tragedies that are tainted with the supernatural, giving the impression that none should get in the  way of destined love. Not only that each chapter begins with a recipe as if to say that the art of cooking and the act of love go hand in hand. Echoes of the biblical love triangle between Jacob and the two sisters he married Leah and Rachel also appear, though unlike the Genesis story, favour firmly remains with the loved sister rather than the rejected one. Love it, love it, love it!
