Bermonsey Belle

March 23, 2009

I’d just like to say how sad I was to hear of Jade Goody’s passing. She was not always the most likeable person but I always admired her honesty about herself as well as her often self depreciating sense of humour.

Much has been written about her life (and dying) being placed under the glare of the media spotlight, the right, the wrongs etc. But this is the world we live in now, where being famous, for whatever reason, makes you a commodity. Jade’s response was to exploit the opportunity to her gain and to provide for her family especially when she knew that she wouldn’t survive her illness. For that I say power to her. She knew firsthand the fickle nature of fame and celebrity and she made the best of it that she could and in her last months did much for raising awareness of cervical cancer and the importance of screenings.

RIP Jade – hope the legacy you leave does much to change lives
